What can I do to help alleviate storm water right now?
  • Make sure your ditches and drains are free of debris
  • Make sure your driveway culvert is clear
  • If you notice debris obstructing the natural flow of water, contact the service department at 330.468.8330
  • Do not connect your sump pump to the sanitary sewer line and make sure they are properly maintained

Why should I care about storm water if it doesn’t affect me?
Storm water affects everybody. If it rains, then water is on your property somewhere and flowing to other parts of the neighborhood. Although you might not see the problems, your property is draining water that is just adding to the problems somewhere else. Furthermore, your property value may be lower if your surrounding houses have water issues because of the way property values are appraised. So the problem might not affect your house directly, but it will indirectly have negative consequences if the issues are not taken care of. Another major issue to consider is safety. If the roads are blocked because storm water is flooding the roads, you may not have an entrance or escape for your house if necessary, and it will be difficult for emergency vehicles to navigate through the city if they cannot use all the roads.

Can I attend a DSCC meeting?
Absolutely. The DSCC is made up of city officials and residents of Macedonia to identify and investigate solutions to drainage and sewer problems that affect Macedonia. The more information and support we receive from the community, the more encompassing the solutions can be to solve everybody’s problem.

How much is this going to cost me?
Unfortunately, it is unknown how much it will cost to fix all our problems. This will be estimated after some professionals in the area assess our situation and come up with those solutions. At that time, they will suggest an overall cost. The truth is that it will cost you a lot more if the problems are not addressed.

What is the survey I read about in the minutes?
Based on conversations with specialists in the field, one tool they use to gather information is by asking the residents about their issues in a survey. The survey will help to gather information city wide so that all water issues can be investigated. The couple minutes used to fill out the survey will be extremely valuable to help come up with solutions to solve the Macedonia flooding issues. If you do not fill out the survey and you have an issue, it may not be guaranteed that your issues will be addressed because they will not be known.

Who is responsible for our storm water and sewer issues?
The responsibility of storm water issues on private property are actually the responsibility of the property owner. However, the city needs to know about your issues so that they can be considered and possibly resolved. Meanwhile, the DSCC and the city are working together to redefine these responsibilities. If everybody in the city has a storm water and sewer issue, then the city as a whole has storm water and sewer issues, not just each individual resident.

Who makes up the DSCC?
The DSCC is made up of city officials and residents of Macedonia. All the residents who are members have storm water and/or sewage issues with their own property and represent different areas of Macedonia. If you are having an issue and don’t see your general area represented, please notify the DSCC. If you want to become a representative of your area that the DSCC doesn’t cover (especially the southern part of Macedonia), please contact Dennis Mulac so he can bring it up at the next meeting.
